Bramblur
Allison Gildersleeve and Katy Stone
Show Runs June 23 – August 18, 2011
Reception on July 1, 5-8pm
Johansson Projects presents new work by Allison Gildersleeve and Katy Stone in Bramblur, an exhibition that examines the material of nature and the nature of materials. Known internationally for her large scale public projects, Katy Stones constructions in metal and Duralar act as both microscope and kaleidoscope, zooming in on the radical strangeness of plants physiques while enhancing the effect with hyperactive colors. Occupying the space between the organic and the fantastic, these dripping fields of acidic color resemble plant life that has been plugged into a circuit. Hailing from New York, Allison Gildersleeves paintings recreate the way landscapes morph into washes of foregrounded color and texture when seen zooming by from a car window. The tangled streaks vibrate at a high frequency impossible to pin down. It appears that each brushstroke was somewhere else a second ago, commanding the senses to be constantly active.
