SF Art Fair, Booth F03
April 17 – April 20, 2025
Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA
Projects presents Annie Duncan, Sheena Rose, Leyla Pekmen, and Lisa Rock at San Francisco Art Fair 2025, booth F03. These four artists all work in a flat graphic style that explore themes of leisure, the everyday, and collective indulgence.
Duncan uses ceramics to illustrate the nuances of femininity, vulnerability, and the body. She recreates representations of everyday objects generally associated with femininity, bringing attention to the relationship between endless consumerism and social pressure toward self-optimization.
Sheena Rose’s relaxed figures challenge centuries of demands for Black labor and instead, finds empowerment through leisure. These figures represent a powerful self image, telling stories that are deeply personal and rebellious. Emanating vivid color, pattern, and antidote, Rose captures exuberant expressions of belonging across athletic platforms and social strata with work that not only explores recreation and heroic athleticism, but also emphasizes camaraderie and connectedness.
Leyla Pekmen employs flatness, colorblocking and subtle patterning to construct immersive land, sea, and pool-scapes. Pekman’s recreation-focused canvases emulsify influences from both east and west to mirror her native Istanbul, playfully recontextualizing sites of global commerce and culture clashes like the Bosporus Strait as zones of leisure. The figures in her scenes are simultaneously small enough to blend in with their surroundings and numerous enough to indicate adherence to a collectivity as they bask and revel in community.
Lisa Rock’s flattened depictions of foliage constitute a field journal of form at the intersection of tended and overgrown landscapes. Derived from photographs taken of paths, yards, and fences encountered on walks in the Bay Area, Rock’s paintings document the intermingling of flora and the built environment common to both urban centers and suburban sprawl. Often named for a flower or plant of visual interest, lush landscapes and complex organic forms are fragmented and distilled into graphic studies of color, shape, and pattern.
